Everything Maali knows lives in files on this computer, and you can take it all with you anytime.
Back up everything
A complete, restorable snapshot (every transaction plus your categories, budgets, accounts, and net-worth setup) in a single file. Save it to an external drive or cloud storage so you can recover it if anything happens to this computer.
Your SimpleFIN account choices are included, but the bank access credential is not. After restoring, reconnect with a fresh SimpleFIN setup token and review the account choices Maali remembers.
Encrypt your backups
Protect your backup files with a passphrase, so they’re safe to keep in cloud storage. You’ll also get a recovery code in case you forget the passphrase.
Save your recovery code
Write this down and keep it somewhere safe. It’s the only way back into your encrypted backups if you ever forget the passphrase.
If you lose both your passphrase and this recovery code, your encrypted backups can’t be opened by anyone, including us. There’s no way to recover them.
Your existing unencrypted backups stay where they are until they age out. Delete them yourself if you keep them in cloud storage.
Restore from a backup
Restore from a backup
Replace everything on this computer with a backup file you downloaded before. Changes made after that backup was created will be lost. When it finishes, Maali opens the restored data or tells you if a restart is needed.
Restoring an encrypted backup (.mbk) will ask for its passphrase or recovery code.
Export transactions
A spreadsheet-ready CSV of just your transactions (date, merchant, amount, category, account) for use in another tool. This is a one-way export, not a restorable backup.
Hiding a merchant from your totals does not remove its transactions from this export. They are still included, with a “yes” in the “merchant_hidden” column so you can tell them apart. Importing the file back in ignores that column.
Delete everything
Start over with a clean slate: permanently erase every transaction, account, category, budget, saved bank connection, and the automatic local safety snapshots Maali keeps on this computer. A backup file you’ve already downloaded is left alone. Your license and the downloaded AI model stay, so you won’t need to buy again or re-download. This can’t be undone.
